Canelo Álvarez is hurting after his first loss in nearly a decade, and he’s still angry about everything that’s happened during a half-decade of fighting and arguing with Gennady Golovkin. Álvarez says he is determined to channel all of those bad feelings into a spectacular win over Golovkin when they complete their rivalry trilogy on Sept. 17 in Las Vegas. The Mexican superstar declared his third fight with Golovkin to be a grudge match Friday as they began promotion of their showdown with a news conference in Hollywood. Álvarez declared he will “definitely” punch the 40-year-old Golovkin into retirement with a knockout.

Katie Ledecky has extended her record haul of medals and Australia has set a world record in the mixed 4x100 meters freestyle final at the world swimming championships in Budapest. American star Ledecky won the 800 freestyle final for the fifth time at the worlds to seal her fourth consecutive 400/800/1,500 triple at the event. Australia’s mixed relay team shaved two-hundredths of a second off the Americans' record from the 2019 worlds. Ben Proud won Britain’s first gold of the championships in the men’s 50 freestyle. Ole Miss is playing for the title after it was the last team to receive an at-large bid for the NCAA baseball tournament. Oklahoma got off to a slow start this season and didn't get hot until the second half. An unseeded team will leave Omaha with the championship for the first time since Coastal Carolina in 2016.

Changes are coming at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, sparked by frustration with years of flat revenue and what some portray as heavy-handed management in the wake of sex-abuse scandals that upended the movement in America. At their keynote addresses at this week’s annual assembly of U.S. athletes and administrators, both CEO Sarah Hirshland and chair Susanne Lyons said the federation’s top-line priority for the upcoming year is on athlete excellence and expanding revenue. This is a shift after years of placing athlete safety above all else after the scandals exposed what critics said was the USOPC’s single-minded focus on money and medals.

On the 50th anniversary of Title IX, let's celebrate another small step on the road to gender equality. Jenny Nguyen has opened The Sports Bra, a bar and restaurant in Portland, Oregon dedicated solely to women's sports. Yep, this is a place where you can stop by to catch a WNBA game, or cheer on the hometown Portland Thorns soccer team. Nguyen got the idea some four years ago after watching the NCAA women's basketball championship on a smallish screen with the sound turned down in a male-dominated sports bar. She decided women's sports deserved a place of its own.

Ledecky has the most medals for a female swimmer in world championships history. Only Michael Phelps has more.

Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk came to play Sheriff in Champions League games last season in Transnistria region that borders Ukraine. But the club cannot host Bosnian champion Zrinjski on July 13 for a Champions League qualifying game. UEFA cites “the large-scale military escalation” in Transnistria during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sheriff also has longstanding business and political ties to Russia.

The IOC will not add a women’s Nordic Combined to the 2026 Winter Games. The decision on Friday confirms skiing as the only Olympic sport lacking gender equality. The long-term Olympic future of Nordic Combined was also put in doubt with no commitment to keep the men’s event on the program in 2030. Nordic Combined tests athletes in the contrasting disciplines of ski jumping and cross-country skiing. It was one of the original 16 medal events at the first Winter Games in 1924. The IOC cites concerns that Nordic Combined lacks a global audience and too few countries field women athletes.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. Richardson, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, was an assistant on Montreal’s coaching staff for the previous four seasons.

Defending champion Harris English shot a second-round 65 Friday to move into a tie for first place at 9-under after the morning rounds at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. Patrick Cantlay, playing in the same group as English, led by two strokes heading into their final hole of the morning. But he found bunkers on his first two shots at No. 9 and finished with a bogey, while English sank a birdie putt from just under 20 feet. Cantlay, who shot a 60 at TPC River Highlands as an amateur in 2011,  had a 67 Friday.

Alex Bowman felt he underperformed last year when NASCAR brought the Cup Series back to the Nashville area for the first time in 37 years. He finished 14th but his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson won the race. The hard part for Bowman was that he had just inked a new two-year contract extension through 2023 to drive the No. 48 for Hendrick with sponsor Ally, and Ally is heavily tied to NASCAR's return to Nashville Superspeedway. He's now seeking a stronger showing Sunday as Ally is again the primary sponsor of the race and has Bowman scheduled for events all across the city.

Novak Djokovic will be trying to win a fourth consecutive Wimbledon title and seventh overall when play begins on the grass courts of the All England Club. He also will be aiming for his 21st Grand Slam trophy. He is seeded No. 1 because the top two men in the rankings are not in the field: No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is barred along with all other players from Russia and Belarus, and No. 2 Alexander Zverev is injured. Iga Swiatek is seeded No. 1 in the women's field and enters on a 35-match winning streak. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams makes her return to singles player after a year away. Play begins Monday.

Link Jarrett is the new head baseball coach at Florida State. The school announced his hiring three days after his three-year run as Notre Dame coach ended in the College World Series. Jarrett was national coach of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after he led the Irish to a 41-win season and their first CWS appearance in 20 years. The move was anticipated. Jarrett is a Tallahassee native, FSU graduate and two-time All-America shortstop for the Seminoles. He'll be introduced at a news conference Monday. He replaces Mike Martin Jr., who was fired two weeks ago.

The AP takes a look at some of the men to watch at the 2022 Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament. Play begins Monday on the grass courts of the All England Club. Novak Djokovic has won the past three men's titles at Wimbledon and six overall. He is seeded No. 1 because No. 1-ranked Daniil Medvedev can't play as part of a ban on all Russian players. Rafael Nadal is seeded No. 2 and enters Wimbledon halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam for the first time. Matteo Berrettini recently returned from a long injury absence and will try to repeat his run to last year's final.

Formula One driver Pierre Gasly will stay with AlphaTauri through 2023. The announcement confirms team principal Franz Tost’s pledge at the Canadian Grand Prix that the 26-year-old Frenchman would “100%” be back next season. Gasly’s future with the team didn’t seem as certain two weeks ago when he had stressed he wants to race for wins and not just points. That led to speculation Gasly could try to break free from Red Bull. Red Bull has backed him for most of his career but does not have an open F1 seat after extending the contract of Sergio Perez.

Slovak champion Slovan Bratislava has signed Belgian central defender Siemen Voet on a three-year contract. The 22-year-old Voet is the second signing in two days for Slovan as it prepares to play Georgia’s Dinamo Batumi in the first qualifying round of the Champions League next month. The season ends at the start of June for the first time since 2001.

The European tour says players who competed in the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV series will not be allowed to play in the Scottish Open and two other upcoming tournaments. The tour says any players who took part in the inaugural LIV event in England this month have been suspended from the Scottish Open, Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship. All three events are co-sanctioned by the European tour and the PGA. They were also fined $120,000. The European tour says there could be “further sanctions” if the players continue to compete in LIV without authorization.
