Athleta is a women's sports and leisure brand under Gap Inc. and now has its first store in Coachella Valley. The new store opened on Tuesday at The Shops in El Paseo, Palm Desert.

The brand is the mainstay of the sports and leisure industry-a combination of sports and leisure-describing its clothing as "multi-functional, high-quality clothing designed by women for women."

Athleta positions itself as a supporter of women's empowerment, focusing on athletics. In recent years, it has signed apparel partnerships with major female athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles and sprinter Allyson Felix, after separating the two from sportswear giant Nike.

Its products cover everything from jogging pants and sports bras to casual buttons and dresses.

The new store will focus on contactless shopping-a staple of many major retail brands in the pandemic era, and a standard feature in most Athleta stores. The El Paseo store provides an "online purchase and in-store pickup" option. Customers can arrange roadside pickup or go to a dedicated in-store site to retrieve items purchased online.

Patricia Cyran, the general manager of the store, said that most Athleta stores “created an average of 20 new jobs in the community, with priority given to local recruitment.” When asked about the nationwide workforce As the store plans to attract employees to fill these positions in the face of shortages, Cyran said Athleta “is continuing to develop our strategy to attract and retain talent.”

Cyran declined to comment on how many people have been hired for El Paseo Athleta so far and whether they are natives of the desert.

The company's expansion in Coachella Valley comes at a time of exciting growth in the sports and leisure industry. As brands capitalize on consumer demand for comfortable and versatile clothing, the fashion category has taken off in the past decade. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has seen explosive growth because the work-from-home policy allows white-collar workers from digital marketers to bankers to wear what they think is most comfortable. Many people think that sports and leisure brands such as Athleta are their first choice.

Athleta's net sales in the most recent quarter were 341 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 35% compared to pre-pandemic sales. According to an earnings report by Gap Inc., the company opened 12 new stores in 2020. This is a painful year for most of the retail industry, and 13 more stores were added before July of this year. The total number of stores has reached 212. Cyran said the company plans to open 12 new stores before the end of this year.

Lululemon is Athleta's larger competitor. It has a store on the streets of El Paseo and San Pablo Avenue. Compared with the same period in 2019, its net income in the most recent quarter increased by nearly $570 million, an increase of 64%. The company opened 11 new stores in the last quarter alone.
