I tried the bra studio in the huge new Sports Direct on New Street - and it's a godsend - Birmingham Live

The bra studio is found on the fourth floor of the new £10 million Sports Direct

Just a week ago, Sports Direct on New Street opened its doors to show off its new £10 million flagship store in the site of the previous Primark. The huge new store has four floors and an ID customisation zone, artificial grass on the floor of the football section, and a bra studio.

I went along to the brand new bra studio to get to grips with just what it entailed and whether it could match me with a perfect sports bra. The new shop at 18 New Street is hard to miss with its neon red, blue and white logo above a large glass doorway.

Head inside and you are faced with a store guide on an LED backlit screen - you know a shop is big when you need a map to get around. Signs pointed up to the top floor for the bra studio, where you can also find shirt personalisation and foot measuring.

I headed up and immediately spotted the neon sign reading ‘Bra Studio’ in front of a large alcove. I headed in and found myself surrounded by sports bras of all shapes and sizes, some patterned, some plain, some black, some bright pink, all ordered from low to high support.

Ahead and left of the doorway is a sign reading: ‘Welcome to the Bra Studio Birmingham New Street ’. Below the sign are two tablets and another sign reading, ‘Try our bra finder!’

You can either use the tablet or scan a QR code on the wall to take a short survey. The questions include your size, what sports or the type of exercise you do, whether you prefer comfort or support and any special requirements.

At the end of the survey, the tablet (or your phone) shows you a number of bras which are a 100 per cent fit with your answers. You also have the option of comparing up to three bras to see price, colourways and any similar features.

I thought the whole survey process took just the right amount of time, asking enough questions that I felt the bras options were personal, but not too long that it felt a chore. My one niggle was that my top recommended bra was not actually in the bra studio.

Thankfully that was not really an issue, as quite a few sports bras popped up saying they were 100 per cent suitable. It also showed which size you should go for, with my options switching between small and medium.

I picked up a couple of my other recommendations and a shop assistant unlocked one of the two fitting rooms. My one complaint was that the member of staff was a little blunt, I have worked in retail before so know first-hand what it can be like, but I do think the store could have done with someone a little more enthusiastic for the exciting and innovative new section.

Inside, the fitting room was larger than any I have seen before, giving you lots of wiggle room and there is even a fold out chair and handles in the corner for disabled access. On the wall it reads: “Who runs the world”, above a line of photos of female athletes.

The floor is bright yellow, an odd choice I thought, but other than that it is the best fitting room I have ever been in and makes you feel very comfortable. There is a floor length mirror with an LED strip around its outside providing excellent lighting.

I tried the sports bras on and sure enough the bra finder was bang on. Each sports bra fit like a dream and felt more than supportive enough to wear for my chosen sport, that being tennis.

All in all I think the bra studio at Sports Direct is pretty good. I think the bra finder could do with a few more questions to narrow down the bras, as it did throw up a lot of options.

At the moment, the bra finder does not tell you anything you could not already find out online. However it condenses it into one easy to use machine and gives you options you can (mostly) find within the same room, so for convenience, the new bra studio will be a god send.

Alternatively, you can shop sports bras directly on Sports Direct’s website.
