We have seen that in the past few decades there has been no shortage of trends returning to the forefront of the fashion conversation. From sweater vests to patchwork items, you never know the next big thing to take over.

To our surprise (and happiness), velvet seemed to be everywhere almost overnight. According to Google Trends, searches for "velvet sportswear" have increased by 100% in the past 12 months.

Throughout the 90s and early 2000s, plush fabrics were usually worn in the style of sportswear. Now it is back in classic matching suits and fashion-forward dresses, tops and pants, and it’s better than ever.

Stylists Abby Wood and Christina Stein were not surprised by the return of the trend, but embraced it with open arms. "I think [Covid-19] created this sportswear trend, this whole craze. And... it's natural for this velvet jumpsuit to reappear at some point," Wood told us.

"I'm really excited to see these sportswear coming back, because I'm like,'Wow, we are really regaining our femininity. It feels like being put together but relaxed.'" Stein said. "I think if people wear those velvet sportswear, they will put in more effort."

Putting in more effort doesn't necessarily mean you have to dress up, but Wood offers some tips on shaping a comeback trend. Her main suggestion is: lean towards the past. "[Try] anything more retro, more like the late 70s/early 80s than the 90s," she said. Wood also recommends choosing pastel tones and neutral colors, and changing the style of tops and pants, such as choosing quarter-zip tops instead of full-zip tops and more modern balloon-leg pants.

In addition to sportswear, velvet has also entered other items in your wardrobe, such as dresses and shirts, and Stein fully supports this change. "Before, I didn't see a lot of velvet or velvet anywhere, even if the weather was not cold, so I really cared about it. I like that it is transforming into other items in your wardrobe," she said.
